Advanced Solutions: Chronic Nerve Pain

Chronic Nerve Pain Management - Kansas City, MissouriSpinal cord stimulators (SCS) are implantable medical devices used to treat chronic neurologic (nerve-related) pain.

An electric impulse generated by the device near the dorsal surface of the spinal cord provides a “tingling” sensation that alters the patient’s perception of pain. Clinical studies have demonstrated Spinal cord stimulators (SCS) efficacy in relieving select chronic pain disorders including failed back syndrome or post-laminectomy syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, diabetic peripheral neuropathy and other types of neuropathic (nerve) pain.

Two types of SCS.

The conventional implantable pulse generator consists of a battery and control electronics. When the battery wears out, it is surgically replaced.

The rechargeable implantable pulse generator consists of a rechargeable battery and control electronics. The battery is recharged by a device worn for a few hours every two to three weeks.

Because every patient has a unique response to treatment, the SCS is initially inserted on a temporary trial basis for several days. If we feel the device will help the patient enjoy a better life, we will arrange for a permanent implant.
